Learning never ends: need for lifelong learning programs

The need for lifelong learning, factors affecting the lifelong learner, and the characteristics of the lifelong learning population are discussed within the social perspective of the USA. Educational and programme implications are provided which should be helpful for programme developers to take into consideration while making decisions about future educational programmes. The viewpoint is offered that to achieve the goals of a learning society, challenged by rapid progress and new knowledge, two elements must be present. Firstly, it is necessary that the related culture values continued learning as a means of improving the quality of life. And secondly, that educators who design educational programmes take into account their students' accumulated life experiences. Twenty organizing principles for programme design are listed
