The Future of adult education and learning in the United States
This report is a result of a project, prepared for US Office of Education, Division of Adult Education, aimed at generating policies to enhance adult learning choices and learning effectiveness in USA. The basic assumption is that adult education and adult learning are different concepts, and that a tension exists between them. Deliberately chosen adult learning is a recent phenomenon, far wider ranging than formal adult education. The future of both depends on cultural and social change. It is important that adult learning be not limited by public policies: on the contrary, adult education should aim at serving lifelong learning. This includes helping less competent adult learners and the educationally disadvantaged. Although a difficult task, it is imperative to involve the public in social and educational policy implementationn
