Technical and vocational education in India: a country report

Country report from India on technical and vocational education for the Symposium on Problems of Transition from Technical and Vocational Schools to Work outlines the structure of the education system and discusses the problems of transition from school to work. In order to bring about better coordination between education and employment, several policy initiatives are incorporated in the national socio-economic development plan, the Five Year Plan 1978-83. Vocationalization of secondary education or educationalization of exclusive vocational training is suggested. On-the-job skill training is considered to be a distinct phase of the integrated system. The government is proposing the establishment of the Board of Vocational Education as a single national agency for planning and organization of vocational and technical education. Four technical teachers' training institutes have been established for regional needs. The report includes statistical tables and diagrams.
