Schools and the community: a growing relationship

As the nature of parent teacher cooperation strongly influences student behaviour, efforts are directed in Australia to foster parent participation in schools - Lack of mutual understanding between parents and teachers creates alienation among adolescents. Teachers in adopting a philosophy of teacher participation have extended the focus of their work beyond the classroom into the community. Common characteristics of successful schemes which foster participation are strong leadership from principals and positive teacher role, development of open structures of organization, construction of alternative curricula, creation of school community relationship, mounting of suitable programmes to enhance parent role.
