Backdrop to the learning society: education perspective for Tamil Nadu

Contributions in this book review educational development in Tamil Nadu, India during the last ten years and examine educational problems related to the introduction of structural changes - Though enrolment in primary education increased universal education has not been achieved. But attendance was generally poor and resulted in educational wastage and dropping out. Expansion of educational opportunities was due to school meal programmes, instructional improvement, community support and parent teacher associations. Qualitative improvements in the formal system will depend on teacher role. The development of skills for lifelong learning should be the basis of curriculum development of primary school curriculum. To achieve universal education and literacy educational organization should be changed into a system of multiple exit and reentering points, with modular training units and use of non-professional staff. Provision for work experience should be made at all stages and vocational education implemented at higher secondary level. There is a need for the promotion of adult functional literacy programmes. In spite of expansion of primary education, nonformal education should not be neglected, especially in rural areas. The educational objectives for the 6-14 and needs of the 15-25 age group are outlined. As open colleges offer a promising alternative, Madurai University has created an open college on the UK model. As regards education and employment opportunities, labour intensive production procedures should be encouraged.
