Coordination between education and population policies: a case study of India

Study on coordination of social policies in the field of family planning and educational policies in India - Since 1921 population trends show a steady increase which entails considerable population problems. In spite of constant educational development efforts outlined in the different Five Year Plans, disparities prevail. The setting up of a central Planning Commission was an important landmark in national interagency coordination, both between various ministries and between the Centre and the States. The interconnection between education and population policies and programmes should be examined in the following fields: 1) improvement of census data collection, 2) introduction of population education as a subject of study, 3) eradication of illiteracy through nonformal education and mass media, 4) raising of status of women in the family, 5) initiation of a national minimum needs programme, 6) improvement of conditions of the scheduled castes and tribes, 7) acceleration of integrated rural development, and 8) curtailment of number oriented government rewards, subsidies and incentives.
