Popular theatre and development: a Botswana case study

Cultural activities such as popular theatre in the form of drama, puppetry, singing and dance are used in an area of Botswana for community education and for self-reliant community development - Laedza Batanani is an annual one-week festival planned through two workshops involving the community in the preparation of the festival. All performances are followed by discussions. The attendance figures indicate that festivals have been successful in attracting large number of people who actively participated. The success of the festivals has encouraged other regions to experiment with popular theatre. To make a lasting effect, popular theatre should be linked with regular, follow-up extension education.
