Co-operation between parents, pre-school and the community

In presenting ways to improve family school relationship and school community relationship in preprimary education this study expresses the more general concern to reduce discontinuities betwen different aspects of children's experience where these may be detrimental to their learning - Preprimary education must be complimentary to family life and not replacing it. Active involvement of parents benefits children more. The tendency for general norms and values to dominate over local conditions is evident in the process of preprimary curriculum development. The starting point should be the children's experience at home and in the community. Most pre-school settings are marked by a child-centred philosophy but not enough consideration is given to the social and cultural context. The ultimate success of any co-operative pre-school venture will be determined by the ease or difficulty that accompany the change in parent role and teacher role. The consequence of taking steps to increase parent teacher cooperation is inevitably to break down the strict demarcation of role and thus the boundaries of responsibility.
