Working with youth: some out-of-school approaches to population, family life and sex education

Increased attention is given to the needs of youth as well as to their role in development processes. Population education and sex education have become part of many youth programmes directed at out of school youth - In various countries (e.g. Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore) programmes aim at training youth leaders and students who will reach other young people or who will act as family planning educators in the community at large (El Salvador, Sri Lanka, Thailand). Another approach consists in using youth as a source of volunteers (Pakistan). Some programmes are designed for disadvantaged youth or young workers, sometimes combined with vocational training (Indonesia, Malaysia). In certain cases use is made of existing youth organizations and groups. In Paraguay population education is provided through parents' and youth clubs.
