A Critique of recurrent education

In the course of a literature review of definitions and assumptions underlying recurrent education (and lifelong education to the extent that they overlap) the author uses models to critique concepts described mainly by British writers - Concentrating on the more radical view of recurrent education the fundamental points are seen to be a rejection of a fixed curriculum, decay of institutional self management and democratization of education with emphasis upon individual autonomy in decision making on educational matters. Although many worthwhile educational goals exist in the radical model, there are also contradictions within the model which would prevent such a programme from being sustained and, in fact, work to limit the concept of recurrent education. A more moderate view is also examined together with its implications.
