Position of languages in school curriculum in India

The main purpose of this survey was to assess the position of language instruction in the situation of multilingualism in India in order to develop plans for its improvement - Information was gathered on general background and linguistic position in each state, its school system, provision of mother tongue instruction and modern language instruction at both the primary and secondary level, time alloted, teacher qualifications and supervision and guidance. Comparative tables on the situation of language teaching in all states were then drawn up. The conclusion reached is that language instruction needs much more attention and planning than is presently given, as language skills form the basis for acquisition of knowledge of other subjects.
