Lifetime distribution of education, work and leisure: research, speculations and policy implications of changing life patterns
This article deals with the distribution of education, employment, leisure and retirement according to age groups in the USA and examines alternative life patterns for the future - At present most persons experience a linear progression from school to work to retirement. In recent decades, working life has become increasingly compressed, resulting in longer periods of adolescence (vocational education), and retirement. The article suggests that this trend will intensify social problems and result in superfluous qualifications and low job satisfaction. An analysis of population trends, family structure, psychological development of adults, educational innovations including lifelong education, social change and changing values (demand for leisure), etc. suggests that new cyclic life patterns, i.e. alternation between work and leisure (recurrent education) will emerge.
