Problems of guidance and counselling in adult education
Lifelong education requires appropriate adult counselling - Two approaches exist. The diagnostic approach (guidance) is based on identification of aptitudes, and aims primarily at selection for training. It is still dominant in France. The educational approach (counselling) emphasizes changing cognitive processes, motivation, and attitudes, as they emerge during the ongoing process of training. It requires successive assessments and an interpersonal relationship between learners and counsellors, rather than selection, and is based on educational sociology, educational psychology, knowledge of group dynamics, and concern with personality development of learners. It also overlaps with teaching. This approach is increasingly being applied to adult education. What is ultimately needed in this area is a series of stages, during which guidance and counselling are integrated, with the aim of promoting effective adult learning to develop autonomy and self actualization.
