The Use of television in pre-school education in sparsely populated areas
Analyses educational disadvantagement of Europe in rural areas due partly to sparse population distribution, and examines to what extent educational television may function as compensatory education which stimulates preprimary education - Television viewing is nowadays part of preschool children's socialization process, its coverage is regional and nation-wide, whereas growing disparities in educational opportunities exist between urban and rural areas. Such gaps are attributable not only to residential factors but also to differences in parent child relationship affecting learning readiness. Television, an ubiquitous facility, can be instrumental in reducing rural disadvantages, given that various elements of multimedia instruction for country preschool children can be combined, along with parent education programmes, into suitably catalytic regional strategies. Examples of such 'compound systems' in the Federal Republic of Germany and the U.S.A. are described, and research indications cited. Bibliography p. 39-47.
