The Learning society

In this book the author examines the school role and college role in the light of social change and other issues emerging at the end of the 20th century, and looks ahead to a system of lifelong education with the 'learning society' as its goal - Education is defined as the 'deliberate, organized attempt to help people to become intelligent'. School systems and educational organization should be directed towards this end. The author discusses the following aspects: access to education, role of the educational environment, education for national power and economic progress (influence of political factors), education in an emerging world community, educational technology, importance of a liberal education, role of colleges, education in a workless society in which leisure dominates.
