Innovation in in-service teacher education and training of teachers: Federal Republic of Germany, Switzerland

Brief description of the organization of inservice teacher education (INSET) and teacher improvement in Germany FR and Switzerland, together with case studies of three innovative inservice courses carried out in the early 1970's, and theoretical models for teacher participation in INSET - In Germany FR, the responsibility for teacher training lies with the Länder, in Switzerland with the cantons. In 1972, a teacher training college was founded in the canton of Aargau to provide a 6-month training course, open to all secondary school teachers to attend on full pay, the theoretical and practical aspects of principles of teaching are firmly linked, and not only are teachers' professional skills and knowledge enhanced but also their readiness to cooperate in innovation and communication. In West Berlin, the introduction of comprehensive education for grades 7 to 10 required the preparation of adequately trained teachers for the special requirements of a comprehensive system, curriculum planning was linked with education courses allowing for teacher participation. In the canton of Lucerne, a project was started in 1972 to reform the curricula for handicrafts and home economics teaching, using a teacher-centred, practical approach. Bibliography p. 104-111.
