Innovation in in-service education and training of teachers: Sweden
Report on inservice teacher education and teacher improvement in Sweden in the 1970's, with case studies on: the coordination of inservice education with policy-oriented educational research and development, teacher seminars, or study days, with locally or centrally determined content, programme evaluation of the SOS, Delta and JET projects, and a project for training principals in school management - Within the reorganization of the school system from rigid primary and secondary levels to comprehensive schools, the need for concomitant inservice teacher education was recognized. The central authority for teacher training is the National Board of Education, which has a special bureau for inservice education. Each of the 6 regions has a Continued Teacher Training Department at a School of Education, and each of the 24 counties has a County Board of Education. Each teacher is granted day release of some 5 days per year. In addition, there are short courses, usually vacation courses. As both inservice training and research and development are administered by the National Board of Education, cooperation has been possible in the analysis of inservice training and research requirements. The study day project allowed teacher participation. Bibliography p. 97-98.
