The Learning society: a report of the study on continuing education and the future

The work on this study commenced in 1972 as an outcome of a national conference on lifelong education and colleges held at Notre Dame, USA. Four task forces were set up to examine developments in various aspects of continuing education - The school systems do not give young adults all the educational guidance they will need during their lives. The changing nature of the US society requires all citizens to gain new skills and intellectual orientations throughout their lives. A conception of the United States as a Learning Society is presented in twelve recommendations concerning implications for 1) curriculum development, 2) economic policies and social policies, and 3) responses of institutions such as schools, colleges and continuing education centres.
