Premises and programs for a learning society

New educational models of lifelong education in USA and recurrent education in Europe make higher education accessible to all persons beyond traditional school age - The fundamental idea behind these models is that of a 'learning society' which accommodates social change and changing personal aims and promotes equal education. American adults are showing increasing interest in higher education and American colleges are making efforts towards expanding the lifelong education concept. Some of the widespread changes advocated by proponents of lifelong education will probably be restricted by the decentralized educational organization in USA, but such programmes will receive increased financial support from federal and state sources.
