Instructional television in the educational reform of El Salvador
A report on the pilot projects of instructional television at lower secondary education level undertaken within the educational reform in El Salvador - It gives detailed information on costs and indicates an apparent cost effectiveness of ITV programmes as they brought about modern methods and a greater equality in learning gains. Student attitudes towards ITV are highly positive. Teacher attitudes are also generally favourable, though teachers perceive the important limitations of ITV. An evaluation of family attitudes showed that the majority of parents were unaware of the reform but were favourable to ITV, once the system had been explained to them. Started in 32 pilot seventh grade classes in 1970, the programme was extended in 1972 to a total of 1,179 seventh, eighth and nineth grade classes in 263 schools. In 1973 televised instruction will be introduced into the fourth grade, and in the next two years into the fifth and sixth grades.
