New patterns of teacher education and tasks: country experience; United States

Report describing educational innovations in teacher education in USA, outlining their effect on school organization and teacher role and presenting estimated costs of alternative futures - Various political, economic and social factors influence teacher training and recruitment. The universities offer a great choice of elective courses with definite trends favouring competency-based training, self-development through teacher seminars and work experience programmes. Inservice programmes make use of minicourses to improve teaching skills, teacher counselling to individualize education and teacher centres. The issues concern recruitment, role of agencies in policy formation, choice of educational strategies and programme evaluation. Case studies illustrating innovative practices are grouped in the following categories: differentiated staffs, educational technology and open plan schools.
