Community fundamental education: a nonformal educational strategy for development

The three main existing forms of fundamental education, i.e. primary education, community development and literacy are critically reviewed and an alternative model for developing countries based on nonformal education is proposed - The model attempts to provide knowledge and skills necessary for changing attitudes of the individual and the community. It is incorporated in the traditional system and builds on the interaction process in the family and community by making use of the existing cross age communication. Educational experience is seen as a parallel activitiy to different tasks performed by the community members in accordance with their time schedule. It aims at a workable literacy system for usage of adults while at the same time creating a supporting system for the acquisition of reading and writing skills of children. The core of the organizational structure is a specialized centre situated in an actual structure or in a combination of several existing ones. Textbook shortage was overcome by the development of looseleaf binders and a series of separate sheets. Curriculum includes for females home economics, nutrition, health and for males farming practices.
