Teacher education for self-reliance: the Lighthouse Learning Program; report and reflections

Report on a four year programme in the Atlantic provinces of Canada organized by the Atlantic Institute of Education with the aim of teacher improvement through increased self reliance - The programme focused on educational innovations and by direct contact with schools identified a large number of good practices where community resources were used imaginatively. Support for such initiatives was given by arranging informal meetings which progressively became teacher seminars with full teacher participation, from these followed a diffusion programme, again with the accent on teacher developed materials so that the programme became one of self-directed inservice teacher education. The report claims that no relationship was discovered between input of money and the development of significant educational innovations in the region.
