Radio's role in development: five strategies of use

An analysis of the role of educational radio in rural areas of developing countries - where it has four advantages: time, cost, effectiveness and localness. Radio is being used for group instruction, nonformal education and community development through the strategies of open broadcasting, instructional radio, rural forums, radio schools and radio animation. The various strategies are illustrated by examples from Africa and Latin America. Radio may also have an important effect on accelerating social change. The conclusion is that radio is far from realizing its potential and future efforts must involve cost effectiveness studies, training of personnel and planning and research so that project areas with institutional support and social awareness are selected.
