Let Jorge do it: an approach to rural nonformal education

In Ecuador, the University of Massachusetts, USAID and the Government cooperated in a nonformal education project in rural areas and this is a preliminary programme evaluation - Educational resources focussing on literacy, arithmetic and consciousness-raising were produced which were useable by nonprofessional personnel and were cheap and easily reproducible. Play was emphasized. interinstitutional cooperation enabled groups involved in cooperative education, adult education, radio schools, to use resources. Although only small groups in small areas were reached, some conclusions were made: untrained campesinos can work effectively with peers and become 'facilitators' and eventually community leaders, literacy and dialogue exercise motivate rural population to community development action, educational radio extends the dialogue. The Project is seen as relevant to other developing countries. The participation of different institutions is an example of a complementary national learning network, where each institution serves different populations and promotes basic learning of skills pertinent to the institution's goals.
