The Effectiveness of alternative instructional media: a survey

A comparative analysis of the effectiveness of various educational media: conventional instruction, educational radio, instructional television, programmed instruction, and computer assisted instruction - Programme evaluation of varying degrees of adequacy of the various methods is surveyed and the conclusion reached is that all the methods are approximately equally effective. Students learn from all of them. The authors stress that this survey is only preliminary and that more research is needed in time factors (learning), cost effectiveness and the effects of individualized instruction. More imaginative use of the media could also result in some new conclusions. The promising but largely untapped potential of instructional radio calls particularly for wider exploration. Bibliography: p. 55-72.
