Nonformal education in African development: a report of a survey conducted by the African-American Institute with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development
An inventory of nonformal education and employment programmes in Africa aiming at vocational development through industrial education, vocational training and on the job training in urban areas and agricultural training in rural areas - Attention is focused on programmes which were successful, innovative and transferable so that African governments and external aid agencies could learn from these projects. In most cases programmes lead to self-employment rather than to wage employment in the modern sector. Apart from brief descriptions of more than 70 vocational training centres and projects including girls schooling, 5 case studies relate experiences in Nigeria (Vocational Improvement Centres), in Botswana (Brigade Training), Tanzania (Work-Oriented Functional Literacy Project) and Cameroon (United Republic of) (Training of middle level personnel). Annotated bibliography on African development and nonformal education: p. 225-246
