Address by Federico Mayor, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of the International Peace Olympiad; Athens, 14 March 1989

Speech recalling the origins of the present Olympiad, in the wake of the Five Continents Conference on Peace and Disarmament, Athens, 1986, which Olympiad seeks to mobilize world public opinion in favour of peace, international understanding and fellowship, and during which time ceasefires will be sought in armed conflicts, a genuine effort to revive the Ancient Greek spirit of peaceful cultural exchange, reflecting the Olympic values of competition in the noble sense of the word
