Address by Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, Director-General of UNESCO, to the IIIrd National Seminar on Local Communities; Meknes (Morocco), 19 June 1986

Speech referring to the role of local communities in preserving the natural environment, in the preservation and safeguarding of the remains of ancient civilizations and of the cultural and historical monuments situated on their territory, and in the non-material heritage of traditional craft and folklore, vocal music, dances and oral poetry, briefly refers to UNESCO's Campaign for the Safeguarding of the City of Fez, including organization of a Fez National Day which provided an opportunity for all citizens to make their voice heard and demonstrate national solidarity
