The Role of teacher training institutions in the development of national languages into languages of instruction in Africa

Working paper presenting a guide to teacher educators on the introduction of vernacular languages as language of instruction or as a teaching subject in primary school curriculum in Africa - proposes a methodology for the integration of African languages into the teacher training curriculum and the primary school curriculum, stressing the need for student participation in this process, discusses difficulties arising from bilingualism in a school context, emphasizing the importance of verbal communication, deals with related problems such as language research, teaching materials and the school/community relationship
