The Impact of tourism on cultural manifestations: arts and crafts

Meeting paper dealing with the effects of tourism on handicrafts and on other forms of traditional culture, such as domestic architecture and distinctive urban environments, examines the changing quality of products in the case of expanding tourism, and the relationship of such products to the cultural environment - considers the needs of both the indigenous population and the tourists, and the desirability of harmony in their interpersonal relations, stressing the preservation of the local cultural heritage, advocates a cultural tourism approach so as to further the preservation of cultural values, provides guidelines for improving tourist programmes through training courses for the craftsman and members of the tourist industry, and improved publicity and information for the tourist, calls for additional research in this area
