Implementation of the substantial new programme of action in African Least Developed Countries: issue for consideration
In September 19'81 the United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries unanimously adopted a Substantial New Programme of Action for the 1980s for the Least Developed Countries ;with a view to; promoting the structural changes needed to overcome the extreme economic difficulties of the least developed countries 5 ; providing these countries with adequate and internationally accepted minimum standards of nutrition, health, education and transport and communications and productive employment opportunities for all citizens; identifying and supporting investment opportunities in priority sectors; and mitigating the adverse effects of natural disasters. 5NPA spelled out domestic measures to be taken by least developed countries themselves and international support measures for the implementation of the country development programmes, as well as national, regional and global implementation and follow-up mechanisms.
