Report of the Conference of Ministers on the work of its fifty-third session

The fifty-third session of the Economic Commission for Africa Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development was held at the Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, in a hybrid format featuring both in-person and online participation, on 22 and 23 March 2021. Opening statements were delivered by Mr. Benchaaboun and the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, Vera Songwe. Ms. Songwe addressed the Conference on the public health, economic and climate nature of the crisis facing African countries. She emphasized the need for the region to secure sustainable access to vaccines and urged African countries to come together and develop a comprehensive package for building forward better, leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area as a springboard for green recovery efforts. Ministers were informed that the African Union Development Agency had launched an initiative to mobilize resources from African pension funds to finance infrastructure development on the continent. Infrastructure development had enabled countries such as Djibouti to advance their geostrategic positioning and role as logistics hubs.
