Summary of the 2020 Africa sustainable development report : towards recovery and sustainable development in the decade of action

The present summary report brings together the key analytical findings from the five pillars of sustainable development, relating to people, prosperity, the planet, peace and partnerships, which are also in line with Agenda 2063 (figure 1). These five pillars are expected to be accomplished through a solid global partnership. The fundamental aim of the 2020 African Sustainable Development Report is to assess progress to date, chart the pathway to 2030 and assess the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on these pillars. The social pillar, the “people” dimension of sustainable development, focuses on the welfare of the population, with the aim of ending poverty in all its forms, eliminating hunger through achieving food security and improving nutrition, reducing morbidity and promoting well-being for all. Progress in poverty reduction has been sluggish in Africa, with a third of the continent’s population remaining in poverty in 2019.
