Statement by Mr. Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the 17th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council. Mr. Janneh, on his remarks highlighted that, The ideal of the African Union and its noble objectives continue to be a source of pride for all Africans and I wish to take this opportunity to thank my brother and friend, Dr. Jean Ping for his dedicated and steadfast efforts, ably supported by Commissioners and the Chief Executive of NEPAD and all their staff to steer and guide the AU Commission to achieve the desired results. We will continue to partner closely with the AU Commission and the African Development Bank in support of our member States. This continent has the potential to be a global growth pole and must therefore concentrate efforts on managing domestic and international economic processes to enable it to play this role. However, the overall measure of our success will be the improvement in the human condition as encapsulated in the Millennium Development Goals, the MDGs.
