The African moment: who should be ready?

Statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA. Mr. Lopes, on his remarks highlighted that, Growth has resulted in a change of fortunes for some of Africa’s countries that have graduated from low income to middle income status such as Botswana, Cape Verde, Ghana and Zambia. Development assistance has played and will continue to play, an important role for many vulnerable African countries, but economic fortunes across the continent are now diverging. Africa needs a development model that guarantees social protection and legislation that empowers citizens economically, protects local industries from unfair global competition and allows them to grow, diversify and compete. Africa has seen a determination at the level of its political leadership; and, without license, by its youth, to participate in this unique moment.
