Launch of the 2013 report of mutual review of development effectiveness (MRDE): statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA

Statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the Launch of the 2013 Report of Mutual Review of Development Effectiveness (MRDE). Mr. Lopes, on his remarks highlighted that, Sustained economic growth over the past years has not been sufficient to increase job creation, reduce inequalities and poverty, and improve human and social development in Africa. As result of its recent re-positioning, ECA intention is to work closely with member States to achieve Africa’s transformation agenda through rigorous research, a new drive for quality data and statistics generated in Africa by Africans, increased support to growth oriented macro-economic policies, and innovative development planning. As the world approaches the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the establishment of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation, the report of the UN High Level Panel on the global development agenda beyond 2015, as well as the current efforts carried out by African countries in order to finalize an African Common Position on the post2015 agenda represent important steps forward.
