Opening Remarks by Mr. Carlos Lopes, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at regional conference of the Beijing + 20 review ministerial meeting. The Beijing Platform for Action builds on contributions from many, including some from Africa such as the Nairobi Forward Looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women or the Dakar Platform for Action. We must not loose sight of the fact that gender equality is not a choice, it is a fundamental human right that we must uphold; this in turn demands that we be courageous in this review. As economists at ECA, allow me to point out some facts.
