New profile by ECA urges Cameroon to step up manufacturing and reduce social inequalities

Despite its laudable development plans as well as the rising level of transformation of its local products, Cameroon still has big gaps to plug in terms of the structural transformation of its economy (structural transformation here referring to a marked change in the components of production of an economy – moving factors of production, notably labor and capital, from lower level productivity sectors such as mere subsistent agriculture/extraction of raw materials to higher levels including manufacturing, other industries and quality services). These are the highlights of an evidence-based profile on the state of Cameroon’s Structural Transformation, Employment, Production and Society for the year 2018, christened STEPS Profile, just published by the Sub regional Office for Central Africa of ECA (download free copy in French for now, here). Examining Cameroon’s production structure, the STEPS Profile notes that in spite of the increasing effort to transform the country’s products, the country’s overall manufacturing sector is instead shrinking. The profile further advocates Government’s action to reduce social inequalities, to improve on the country’s urbanization, to leverage the demographic dividend and factor environmental protection in its development efforts.
