African governments urged to integrate statistics and geospatial information for sustainable development

The United Nations Regional Committee on Global Geospatial Information Management in Africa (UN-GGIM: Africa) concluded on Thursday, with experts urging African leaders to prioritize the dialogues needed to ensure effective collaboration national statistical, planning and mapping authorities in strengthening the respective infrastructure and data systems on the continent. The participants call on the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and other pan-African institutions to collaborate to promote and defend the importance of geospatial information in achieving the Goals of sustainable development at national, regional and international levels. The promotion of trade and regional integration is also of crucial importance. ECA and UN-GGIM: Africa are urged to continue developing the African spatial statistical framework and guidelines for national strategies in that area for the development of statistics.
