The question of national identity and migratory movements in West Africa

The question of national identity in Africa is as acute as it is on the other continents, since the gradual change to modern forms of collective life leads, here as elsewhere, to the formation of national entities. By this, one must understand that the former peoples, whose history is associated with agrarian or pastoral economies, have always been and still are influenced by the attractions of new markets and the actions of more centralized political authorities. Thus some peoples or ethnic groups have become merged with one another while others are still isolated or cut-off. From this is derived the national society characterized by an economic, cultural and political unity which is stronger than that of the pre-existing societies.
