Trans-African highway network: information paper

In July 1971 the Economic commission for Africa launched the Trans African Highway project between Lagos, Nigeria, Mombasa and Kenya. In view of the Commission’s role in the region, this could be only a pilot project to make it possible to draft principle and methods for effective Intra-African cooperation in the construction of international highway. This has been a positive experience because the Lagos Mombasa project has made it possible to design and set up appropriate institutions in which African government, industrialized countries, Africa intergovernmental organization and the United Nations have been able to work in harmony and define ways and means to solve the various problem that are encountered in the realization of a Trans Africa highway. The results have already helped in working out a scheme for road network at regional level, on outline of which is presented in this note.
