Country practices in the collection and compilation of price statistics in the African region
This paper is intended to describe the methods and practices used by African countries in collecting and compiling price statistics and calculating the related index numbers. The paper starts with a general' review of available data on index numbers in the region as revealed by the results of the questionnaire sent out by the Economic Commission for Africa for completion by the countries. The materials used in preparing the paper have mainly been obtained from the country replies to the ECA questionnaire mentioned above; from publications of some countries on prices statistics and index numbers available in the ECA library, other national materials, methodological descriptions and notes in the publications of the United Nations and its agencies.
