ECOWAS contribution to West African effort at economic recovery and renewed development

The theme for this International Conference on the African Economy recognizes the difficult position in which African countries find themselves but it also leads one to hope. Africa is indeed at the cross-roads and faces a grim challenge of survival. For many African countries, the little economic development that was initiated after political independence in the 1960s has ceased and their economic growth rate turned negative by the beginning of the 1980s. The world recession and the hostile international environment it engendered only compound the decline and structural difficulties that African economy are facing. These enfeebled economies are. therefore, in no position to cope with the economic crisis which is heightened by the severe droughts and famine in many countries. It is no exaggeration to talk to the challenge of economic recovery and survival in Africa.
