Price and price analysis in the framework of the national accounts

This paper examines the role of prices within the framework of the United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA). It highlights three major uses of price data in: deflation; Quasi-price indicators; and price analysis. Price is the most important basic economic and statistical variable, for example in the evaluation of economic conditions, the measurement of production trends, the assessment of inflation, etc. Information on prices and changes in prices forms an important part of the description of the economic process. Prices play an important role in the SNA. They are used primarily to transform current price values of production, expenditure and capital formation into values in constant prices.
