The PTA bank 29th annual general meeting: statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA

Statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the PTA Bank 29th Annual General Meeting. Mr. Lopes, on his remarks highlighted that, international trade can represent a powerful springboard to spur economic growth and lift the living standards of millions of people, especially in light of Africa’s natural resources wealth. He emphasized this, since China is the first non-regional member of the PTA – that deeper regional integration and growing linkages between Africa and other Southern partners can be instrumental in improving the continent’s development prospects. A Trade Finance Fund would go a long way in filling the gap that the private sector in the region is unable to meet. The time for the Fund is now, because Africa must continue to learn from lessons at home and globally. The Trade Finance Fund should not only embrace trade import finance, but also trade commodity financing especially in an intra African context.
