AU Conference of Energy Ministers of Africa : statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA

Statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the AU Conference of Energy Ministers of Africa. Mr. Lopes, on his remarks highlighted that, African countries largely exhibit low resilience to extreme climate events and many depend on agriculture and fisheries for food security and livelihoods. The need to find alternatives to fossil fuel based energy is therefore apparent. Africa, and Cape Verde are harnessing their wind potential and are creating wind farms to complement other generation sources. In addition, Kenya is actively developing geothermal generation projects with two financed with support from the Clean Development Mechanism. Most African countries still have not carefully designed and implemented policies to facilitate this process. At a time when we have many Africans benefiting from the digital revolution, prior to achieving the electricity revolution we have to ask ourselves how we can accelerate our efforts to cater to the energy needs of a population that will double by the year 2050.
