Message of the Secretary-General on the occasion of world AIDS day ,1 December1996
Message of the secretary-general on the occasion of world AIDS day 1 December 1996. HIV/AIDS is a global problem. No country or region is immune. Today, some 22 million people are living with ,HIV/AIDS, while the total number of world-wide AIDS related deaths has reached 6 million. These are appalling statistics, but there is nothing inevitable about the global spread of HIV. In the developed world, the success of prevention and sex education programmes, and awareness campaigns among intravenous drug users have demonstrated that rates of HIV infection can begin to be arrested and addressed with positive results.
