Promoting information literacy: lessons from education and lifelong learning

Literacy in general and functional literacy in particular are at the heart of any educational empowerment. Simply defined, literacy relates to acquisition of skills to use written language. Literacy is a powerful tool that is used in to exploit and manipulate the environment be it educational, economic, political etc. In particular literacy is a basic tool one needs in order to participate in information literacy activities. Torres (2002: 35) adds that literacy is not only key to basic learning needs but also comprises "knowledge, information, skills, values and attitudes necessary for personal, family and community awareness and development."
