Experts say citizen participation essential for regional integration success

In order for regional integration to take hold among countries, the idea needs to get out of the conference centres, and to reach and be owned by the people affected the Rwanda Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said. “We need to get our citizens involved,” said Louise Mushikiwabo. “We need to take this much closer to the citizens that we serve and make sure they are informed and able to provide their own feedback.” The two-day meeting was a chance for stakeholders and others interested in regional integration to have their say on the matter. SRO-EA Director Antonio Pedro, called the meeting highly successful. He also pointed out that for ECA, regional integration is not new. In fact, it’s part of the organization’s mandate.
